Pilates is a body conditioning system that tones and mobilises the whole body, improves postural alignment and decreases stress. Postnatal Pilates places particular emphasis on strengthening the pelvic floor and the abdominal muscles, aiding posture and stability, as well as all over toning and prevention of back pain
After pregnancy it is important to do exercises specifically designed for postnatal women, which strengthen the deep abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor. Standard abdominal exercises, such as sit-ups, should be avoided as they can have the opposite effect of what is desired: they can lead to doming of the abdominal muscles if carried out before the deep muscles are sufficiently strengthened.
Pilates lessons can be commenced 6 weeks after a natural birth and 8 weeks after a c-section. You are welcome to have your baby with you during your lessons.
